Create 'my' shortcuts to landing pages
June 2, 2010Create easy to type links to specific 'landing pages'.
What is a 'Landing Page'?
At times you might find the need to provide a link to a unique landing page in your website. It could be that you are creating a printed brochure and you want to direct customers to a particular page on your site instead of the home page.
This special purpose page is known as a 'landing page' and its content can be tailored to the specific needs of the visitors you send there. This helps avoid them having to go to the generic home page and then navigating to the page that is specific to their needs.
Why use a short cut to a custom landing page?
This new shortcut feature lets you create a shortcut to a custom page instead of having to type out the normal link to a custom page. Normally the ease of typing and prettiness of a link is not an issue because users simply click on links on your site or in a list of search engine results and so don't really take much notice of what's in the link but when you create a printed brochure you need to include a link that is concise and simple so that users can type it in without error.
Normally a custom page has a URL of the form:
www.mysite.com/content/list/o/orgId/type/customPageType
but with the shortcut this reduces to:
mysite.com/my/customPageType
'my' becomes the new page type for custom landing page shortcuts.
customPageType is the 'key' that you have assigned to the custom page that will act as your landing page. If you don't yet have one simply create a custom page by clicking on the 'All custom pages' icon in the Page Manager.
Say, for example, that you have a website that services all types of European cars but you want to print a brochure with a target audience of Audi owners. You can create a special landing page for Audi owners and include this link boldly in your printed brochure. The link would be of the form:
mysite.com/my/audi
(Note how you don't need to include the leading 'www.' either for these types of shortcuts)
The shortcut is a lot easier to type (and a lot prettier) than:
www.mysite.com/content/list/o/234349/type/audi
